The Modern Eric
I am currently living in Osaka, Japan! I’m attending Osaka University as a PhD student in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (Computer Science Division). I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002.
The Academic Eric
I’m presently enrolled as a PhD student at Osaka University in Osaka, Japan. I’m working with Hagihara Lab on task scheduling in distributed systems. However, I’m also interested in distributed computing in general, as well as evolutionary/genetic algorithms and nanotechnology. Before I came to Japan, I worked on SETI@home and BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Networked Computing). While a student at Berkeley, I did research for Professor Fateman in symbolic mathematics, part of which involved a Java based graphing calculator – Biscotti. For a list of select publications, please look here.
The Hobbyist Eric
In my spare time, I study German and Japanese, and do weightlifting, running and swimming. I also watch way too much Futurama, Simpsons, Family Guy and anime. Other activities that I find entertaining (but have little time to do) include tennis, hiking, archery, skiing and fencing. In Japan I do kendo, and occasionally kyudo and naginata.
The Musical Eric
Some of my favorite bands include Weird Al Yankovic, Pink Floyd, William Orbit, Rammstein, and Paul Van Dyk. I’ve also become interested in classical music recently.
The Former Eric
I recently finished a one year Japanese program at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. Before that I was an English teacher at Washu High School and Kojoike High School in Okayama, Japan. Before coming to Japan, I worked full time at SETI@home in Berkeley, California. I also did work on Optical SETI at Leuschner Observatory. While a student at Berkeley, I lived for a year with the dynamic duo Gifford Cheung and Alan Ni. Then I resided at Claret House for two years.
The Picturesque Eric
A relatively recent picture of me in front of my favorite river in Kyoto (Kamogawa). Here’s a very outdated picture of me (I’m in front). And finally, a portait of Eric as he readies for a long school day (courtesy of Gifford Cheung).
